Mastic Repairs
Mastic products are hot-applied, pourable, self-adhesive patching materials used to repair asphalt. Mastic is the perfect solution for cracks that are larger than typically repaired by crack or joint sealing, but smaller than those requiring full removal and replacing procedures.
Mastic products are adhesive and flexible, making them resistant to vehicle loadings.
Because of the versatile nature of this product, the procedure will change depending on each individual situation.
Step 1: Preparation
The first step consists of identifying appropriate locations to repair using the mastic product.
Next, it must be determined what type of pavement preparation is needed. This could require some asphalt or concrete removal.
All areas to be applied with mastic must be cleaned using an air compressor to ensure a clean bonding surface.
Step 2: Application
Apply the mastic to the desired area. The mastic is most often spread and smoothed by a box squeegee.
The edges of the mastic repair are feathered into the existing asphalt as much as possible with the use of a hot iron.
